Abstract

Marriage is the physical and spiritual bond between a man and a woman as husband and wife with the aim of forming a family. One of the things that must be considered in marriage is kafa’ah, namely compatibility and equality. Every human being definitely has different perceptions of kafa’ah/equality and its implementation in marriage. This research is field research with data collection methods, in this research using interviews and documentation, as well as qualitative data analysis techniques using inductive thinking methods. That is, drawing conclusions starts from questions or specific facts leading to general conclusions. Data and facts resulting from field observations are compiled, processed, studied and then their meaning is drawn into general statements or conclusions. The results of this research show that the implementation of kafa’ah in marriage is generally in accordance with the concept of kafa’ah, although it is not optimal, this is because not all people understand the meaning of kafa’ah. In practice, prospective husbands and prospective wives will choose a partner who meets the desired criteria, namely being beautiful/handsome,  well-off, from a good family, and devout in worship. Because not all prospective partners know that there are more important factors in selection, the priority for determining equality is to choose candidates based only on their material. This is what makes the implementation of kafa’ah in marriage not optimal.
